Simsbury Newcomers Club

september 2009

Dates to Remember

Board Meeting: Thursday, September 3, 9:30 am @ Wendy Sue Kissa’s home, 1 Grant Estate Drive, West Simsbury.

Activities Sign Ups! September 14, 6-8pm and September 15, 9-11 am at the Apple Barn, 60 Old Farms Road in Simsbury. Come see what kind of fun you can have!

Childcare

The Childcare position is currently vacant. Childcare is a great position – you’ll provide assistance in getting a babysitter (or two) for Board Meetings and different events, so many mothers who are in the club can join in on the fun! If you’d like to help the club out by taking on this position, please contact Debbie Bernard at 658-9700.

President’s Corner

Welcome to a new season of Newcomer’s!

The board has some fabulous ideas for the year, and we are starting out with an Ice Cream Social on August 23rd to get to know some of our new families in town and share stories with those who have lived here for a while.

The sign-ups for the new year will be in September 14th and 15th at the Apple Barn. Please renew your membership, or bring a friend who has just gotten to our community. We are also open to new ideas so if you have a new idea for a group, or want to start one, we encourage you to get in touch so we can have you represented at sign-ups.

Being new to an area is transition which can be made easier by getting to know a few friendly faces. There is so much going on during our year with the activity groups, and we gather in the fall, winter and spring for big events for the whole club. We look forward to seeing you back this fall and if there is anyway the board can help you let us know!

Book Discussion – Days

Welcome to Daytime Book Group! We meet either the third or fourth Friday morning of each month and enjoy lively but informal discussion about our book selections. Our meetings last about 1 1/2 hours while a volunteer reviewer provides background information on the author and introduces discussion questions. Rotating hostesses supply coffee, snacks and the venue.

The first fall meeting will be a Title’s Brunch on September 18th, where we select readings for the year from member suggestions. Please contact Patrice Sala or Camilla Thompson for more information about specific time and place. We look forward to seeing you!

Book Discussion – Evenings

Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 6 at 7pm at a location to be announced. For a copy of this year’s reading list, meeting dates and locations, please contact Cindy Schafer.

Bridge – Couples’

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Plans are well underway for another exciting season.

Our first meeting will be on September 12th at the home of Karl and Wendy Sue Kissa. We will meet at 7 p.m. to end the summer and start the season with a Wisconsin BBQ which means hamburger and brats.

Walking/Ramble Group

Walking with the Newcomers Walking Group is an enjoyable way to get some exercise in the pleasant outdoors while you are walking with friends. We walk along the Greenway Trail on Iron Horse Boulevard each weekday morning. We meet at 9 AM in the Park ‘n Ride lot on the lower level behind CVS. I will plan a hike to Heublein Tower in October so we can see the spectacular fall foliage. If you would like to walk at Reservoir #6 in West Hartford or another location sometime, please let me know and I will schedule a date. If you have any questions or want to verify that we are walking on a certain morning, please give me a call. I look forward to seeing you at the Sign-ups on September 14 and 15!
