Childcare

The Childcare position is currently vacant. Childcare is a great position – you’ll provide assistance in getting a babysitter (or two) for Board Meetings and different events, so many mothers who are in the club can join in on the fun! If you’d like to help the club out by taking on this position, please contact Marion Paterson at 658-1154.

Nominating

The Nominating Board position is vacant. If you are outgoing, like to meet new people, and are good at “matchmaking”, please consider filling this position to help our group. Please contact Marion Paterson at 658-1154 for more information, or if you are interested in taking this position.

Much more than the typical Farmer’s Market! The Simsbury Farmer’s Market is held rain or shine at Simsmore Square, 540 Hopmeadow Street, every Thursday from 3pm to 7pm through October 2nd. In addition to local farms selling fresh vegetables and fruits, there are also local vendors with home-baked goods, granolas, salsas, coffees, artisan cheeses, olive oils, meats, soaps, plants and crafts. Enjoy live music, sample local fare.

Do you have a daughter/son who would like to baby-sit? Send Patty information of members’ children who are interested to baby-sit. Do you have a service provider you would like to recommend? Patty maintains a “List of Services Recommended by Newcomers”. This is available at the Coffees or can be emailed to members upon request. If you have a recommended service provider, or if you have feedback (good or bad) on anyone on a previous version of this list, please contact Patty Howland.

President’s Corner

Dear Newcomers,

Well, I cannot believe that the summer is nearly over as I write this. I hope everyone has had a wonderful warm – if also WET – season! I am looking forward to starting another Newcomers year and seeing everyone again. I look forward especially to seeing you at our first coffee on Thursday, August 21st, and again at our Sign-Ups on September 15th in the evening or the 16th in the morning. (See details of all these events inside the newsletter!)

Many of you know, but I really want to take a minute to explain our exciting new coffee schedule. This first coffee will be strictly a social evening. However, moving forward we are RE-instating our MONTHLY coffees, but as a twist, we’re combining them with activities. This means that each month a different activity group will “host” our coffee. That way, people new to the area as well as all of us will get a chance to experience the different activities which make up the heart and soul of our organization. I am so excited to visit some different activities myself. I hope you will all find the time in your schedules to broaden your horizons, too! Please watch carefully in each newsletter for announcements about the next month’s coffee.

As I scramble to pull together school supplies and new clothes for my two girls to start the school year, I want to take a moment to thank Janet Marcum for her hard work in pulling together two backpacks which we are donating to Gifts of Love and to thank all of you who donated items. This was a new endeavor for us and I hope we can do it again next year to help two students start the year off right.

I am told it is time for me to stop “working” and come for a swim, so I shall do that and hope you are all doing fun things as our summer draws to a close.

See you VERY soon!

Marion

Civic Concerns

Thanks to all who supported our backpack program. We not only bought and filled two backpacks for our children, but had enough money left to supply two additional packs and some items to fill them. The people at Gifts of Love were having trouble filling all the requests and were very grateful for our help. You’ve made a lot of kids happy.

Membership & Directory

Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know you do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone!

Dues are $24 for the 2008-2009 membership year. Checks should be made payable to “Simsbury Newcomers Club” and sent to Sherry Hill at 12 Olde Orchard Road, West Granby, CT 06090 along with the completed membership form.

Membership entitles you to:

  • A copy of the monthly Newsletter via email or regular mail,
  • One copy of the Directory and periodic updates,
  • Access to the many activity groups, and
  • Childcare for daytime program meetings for a small fee.

Please note that the Directory is for the exclusive use of Club members, cannot be used for solicitation, and will NOT be included on the website. Additional copies of the directory may be purchased while available for $2.00.

I’m glad to be taking on this position, and I hope to do the club proud. If I can help out in any way, or if you have any announcements or advertisements you need to make here, feel free to contact me at any time. Email is your best bet, but phone calls are fine, too.

Book Discussion – Evenings

Book Selection Night – August 26th at 7:00 pm.

Join us to help select our 2008-2009 reading list! We will meet at Borders Bookstore to exchange ideas, choose our titles and set dates for our upcoming meetings.

Please come with at least one highly recommended or well-reviewed book in mind to suggest to us. If you can’t make it, but would like to have input, please email Cindy by August 25th.

Our reading list and schedule will be announced at the Fall Activity Signups, and published in next month’s newsletter.

Bridge – Couples’

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Potluck Dinner

Plans are well under way for an exciting season!

Bev and Lee Lapioli are hosting our “Fresh & Fabulous Feast” on September 6th.

On October 4th, Tom and Marilyn Iezzi will be hosting us again – this time for a pig roast!

There is currently a waiting list for both events, but if you are interested in either, please contact us. We will be at sign-ups on September 15th and 16th with several different ideas for the coming year. Potluck compiles a new list every season, so everyone needs to sign up yearly.

If you are interested in preparing and sharing food and entertaining friends both new and old, please join us. Hoping to see you soon!

Walking/Ramble Group

Welcome to another year of Newcomers activities! The Walking/Ramble group will have many opportunities for healthful and fun walks as well as a variety of delightful rambles where we explore different outdoor venues. There are some new locations in my repertoire that I hope we can visit occasionally for walks.

Be sure to sign up at our table at the September Sign-Up meetings so you can be on the e-mail distribution list and receive more details about our events. See you on September 15 (evening) or September 16 (morning) at the Apple Barn!
