Do you have a daughter/son who would like to baby-sit? Send Patty information of members’ children who are interested to baby-sit. Do you have a service provider you would like to recommend? Patty maintains a “List of Services Recommended by Newcomers”. This is available at the Coffees or can be emailed to members upon request. If you have a recommended service provider, or if you have feedback (good or bad) on anyone on a previous version of this list, please contact Patty Howland.
Dear Friends at Newcomers:
Happy Fall!
The school year has started and events are underway at the Simsbury Newcomer’s club. If you are new to the area, or if you have been here a long time, we welcome you and look forward to getting to know you this year. By the time you get this newsletter, sign-ups will be over, but if you have forgotten or just arrived, please go to the website, get the sign up form and send it in with your renewal check!
There is a new Bunko group meeting on Wednesday nights and we welcome anyone who wants to start a new group to get in touch with Marianne Kalogeros about your idea. We will be going apple picking with anyone interested on October 7th from 4-5pm at Lost Acres Orchard – let me know if you would like to come – it is a great activity for families!
Speaking of families, we have voted to make the Child Care board position a Family Event Coordinator and we are still looking for a person to fill this position. We hope to plan 2-4 family events during the year for the club to encourage your family’s participation. If you are interested in taking this position, please contact Debbie Bernard.
The October Potluck and Program is a wonderful way to have an awesome meal prepared by great cooks and get to know new friends, please come! There will be child care available on site. Potluck is great to see friends, and the one this month is a progressive through the Billingsgate neighborhood. And mark your calendar now for the Holiday Party (which is December 19th) graciously hosted for a second year by Jane Porterfield & Gerry Pastor!
Thank you to all those who host events, plan events and come to events. It is going to be a great year!
Wendy Sue Kissa
Welcome to Girlfriend’s Corner, where we wish our Newcomer friends happy birthday, and send them get-well wishes as needed. If you think there is a Newcomer who would appreciate a get-well card, new baby, or condolence card, please contact Charlotte Ray by phone or by email.
Happy Birthday Wishes to the following members:
Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know they do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone!
Dues are $24 for the current membership year. Checks should be made payable to “Simsbury Newcomers Club” and sent to Sherry Hill at 12 Olde Orchard Road, West Granby, CT 06090 along with the completed membership form.
Now is the time to renew your membership to continue receiving the newsletter & be included in the 2009-10 directory.
Membership entitles you to:
Please note that the Directory is for the exclusive use of Club members, cannot be used for solicitation, and will NOT be included on the website. Additional copies of the directory may be purchased (while available) for $2.00.
Membership forms will be available at meetings/events and online @: http://simsburynewcomersclub.org/join-us/membership-form.
Anyone selling, renting or providing a non-club service can advertise in our newsletter. A business card size or ¼ page ad is $15/month. A ½ page ad is $20, a full page ad is $30. Ads will be included based on available space.
We’re in need of a “Family Events” person for the board. This replaces the old Child Care position. We saw this as someone who would focus on family oriented events (ice cream socials, skating, playgroups, picnics etc.) and also could coordinate the babysitting for the group. This person does not have to be a mom, just whomever has the interest.
The position is open now and we are looking for a creative person to step forward! If you’re interested, please contact Debbie Bernard.
Welcome to Daytime Book Group! We meet either the third or fourth Friday morning of each month and enjoy lively but informal discussion about our book selections. Our meetings last about 1 1/2 hours while a volunteer reviewer provides background information on the author and introduces discussion questions. Rotating hostesses supply coffee, snacks and the venue.
The first fall meeting will be a Title’s Brunch on September 18th, where we select readings for the year from member suggestions. Please contact Patrice Sala or Camilla Thompson for more information about specific time and place. We look forward to seeing you!
For October, we’re reading the Farmington Valley “One Book” selection:
“They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys from the Sudan,” by Alephonsion Deng, Benson Deng & Benjamin Ajak.
Our next meeting date has been changed to Tuesday, October 13, at a location to be announced. To be included in our email list and receive monthly updates, please contact Cindy Schafer.
Our complete 2009-10 reading list is now available. Please join us to discuss any of the titles that interest you!
Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.
Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.
Are you looking for something fun to fill one morning a month? Do you love the thrill of competition? If so, why not sign up to play Bunko. This is an easy dice game you can learn in a few minutes. Join us as a regular or a sub. If you are interested, call Arlene Zappile at 408-9044.
Please join us for Movie Night!. Movie Night is usually the 4th Friday of the month, although we sometimes select a Saturday evening or Sunday matinee. “Good eats” afterward is always an option. Please email Marylou if you would like to get on the Movie Night Mailing List. Husbands, boyfriends, families are all welcome!
This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.
We would like to thank Karl and Wendy Sue for generously hosting our first event of the season. It was marvelous to be able to accommodate all who wanted to attend, since this is not always possible.
Remember, potluck generates a new list every year. If you have not already signed up for the present season you need to do so to receive your invitations. All invitations will be issued by e mail and responses will be taken the same way. This ensures accuracy in compiling our lists.
On October 3rd we will be using a different venue for potluck. Some of our members from Billingsgate have offered to host an Indian Summer Progressive Dinner. There will be a limit of 45 reservations, and the cut off date will be Friday September 25th. As always those who have hosted in the past 2 years or have committed to host this year will be given preference.
Looking forward another great season!
The fall season is a special time to walk with the Walking Group. We walk along the Greenway Trail on Iron Horse Boulevard each weekday morning. We meet at 9 AM in the Park & Ride lot on the lower level behind CVS. You are welcome to join us on any morning that fits your schedule. I am willing to walk at another location if suggested. If you are interested in hiking up to Heublein Tower to see the fall foliage, please let me know so you can be included in the planning for that event. If you have any questions or to verify that we are walking on a certain morning, please contact Charlotte.
Welcome Back to Wine & Women! This very informal group gathers about once a month to enjoy a glass of wine together. All you need to do is bring a bottle of your favorite wine and, if possible, a small appetizer or dessert. For our first gathering of the 2009-2010 year, Cynthia Wohlschlaeger has agreed to host us.
