Dear Newcomers,
I am so excited to be starting our Newcomers year with many fun-filled activities!
I enjoyed seeing many of you at the Sign Ups at the Apple Barn. For those of you who couldn’t make it, note that there is a copy of the membership form IN THIS newsletter – please take a minute to fill it out and send it in with your dues so you can be included in the directory.
Consider joining Charlotte Ray and the walking group on Tuesday, October 7 for our first official “Gathering” – our new name for “coffees”. You can walk off the calories before heading for a coffee together.
I know you will be looking forward to our great Fall Potluck luncheon on October 23rd. I, personally, am looking forward to sampling your delicious recipes! This is a great time to invite any friends – new or old – to join us and we will have membership forms there.
One more important date to note: Please mark December 20th on your calendar for our Annual Holiday Party.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Marion Paterson

We will be collecting donations for the Simsbury Food Closet at the potluck luncheon on Oct. 23rd. This organization is part of the Social Services Dept. and donations go to the residents of Simsbury. They especially need items such as canned meats and fish, beef stew, soups, canned meals, i.e. chow mein, spaghetti and sauces. Currently they don’t need any paper products. Please bring to the luncheon or call me for pick-up in October.
We have a time and place for the 2008 Holiday party, but we need help!
We’re looking for volunteers to assist with setup and cleanup before and after the party, as well as a few miscellaneous (and small) tasks during the event.
Also, if you know of any high school or college-age kids who’d like to make some easy money, we need a few. We are also in need of a bartender.
If you have any information on who could help (or you’d like to volunteer yourself!) please give me a call!
Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know you do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone!
Dues are $24 for the 2008-2009 membership year. Checks should be made payable to “Simsbury Newcomers Club” and sent to Sherry Hill at 12 Olde Orchard Road, West Granby, CT 06090 along with the completed membership form.
Membership entitles you to:
- A copy of the monthly Newsletter via email or regular mail,
- One copy of the Directory and periodic updates,
- Access to the many activity groups, and
- Childcare for daytime program meetings for a small fee.
Please note that the Directory is for the exclusive use of Club members, cannot be used for solicitation, and will NOT be included on the website. Additional copies of the directory may be purchased while available for $2.00.
Membership forms will be available at coffees, general meetings and online @: http://simsburynewcomersclub.org/join-us/membership-form
Anyone selling, renting or providing a non-club service can advertise in our newsletter. A business card size or ¼ page ad is $15/month. A ½ page ad is $20, a full page ad is $30. Ads will be included based on available space.
The Newsletter is on the web at simsburynewcomersclub.org

Most of us are familiar with the “Coffees” that SNC has held in the past. Well, it’s time for a change. We have decided to mix it up just a bit and change the name, as well as the meaning of these beloved events. In the future, we will have “Gatherings” at various existing activities so that current and potential members can give the host activity a try. So if you have intended to try, for example, the Walking/Rambling Group, you’re in luck! This group happens to be the first to host a “Gathering”. (See the Walking/Rambling Group article for more details.)
Not only will Gatherings be announced in the Newcomers monthly newsletter, they will also be advertised in local papers as well. In this way we can ensure that we are reaching out to our community on a regular basis and offering potential members the opportunity to see for themselves what a great organization we have at SNC.
Welcome to Daytime Book Group! We meet the 3rd or 4th Friday morning of each month and enjoy lively discussions about our current book selection. The format consists of a guided discussion followed by a nice exchange of ideas and opinions. Please call the hostess so she can plan for attendees. Questions? Please call either Patrice Sala or Camilla Thompson, co-chairs.
Our next meeting will be on Friday, Oct. 24th @ 9:30am, at Camilla Thompson’s home. Please call us for the book selection.

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.
Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.
Are you looking for something fun to fill one morning a month? Do you love the thrill of competition? If so, why not sign up to play Bunko. This is an easy dice game you can learn in a few minutes. Join us as a regular or a sub. If you are interested, call Arlene Zappile at 408-9044. Don’t forget – you can sign up at the BunKo station at the Activities Signup on the 15th and 16th!

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.
A huge “thank you” to Bev and Lee Lapioli for entertaining the Fresh and Fabulous Fest.
In October the Iezzis are hosting a Pig Roast which sold out very quickly. Call if you are interested as cancelations may have occurred.
Potluck is growing in popularity and size. In an effort to accommodate everyone, this coming season may see the group hosted at two separate locations each month. This will accomplish two things.
First is to alleviate the stress of one hostess entertaining such large numbers.
Second, it eliminates the waiting list and the excuse frequently heard ” our home is not large enough to host the group.” We will be randomly mix attendees every month so that we get to know everyone.
In order to accomplish this everyone who signs up must commit to hosting. Hopefully there will be months when a hostess will feel comfortable having the entire group.
These changes are being implemented to keep Potluck viable.
October is a beautiful month for walking with us.
We have several special events planned for the month. On Tuesday, October 7, the Walking Group will host the first Newcomers Gathering (formerly known as a Coffee) for the year. We will meet in the Park ‘n Ride lot on the lower level behind CVS at 9 AM. We plan to walk on the Greenway Trail along Iron Horse Boulevard for about an hour (or less). The group will set the length and pace of the walk. Then we will go to Peaberry’s for coffee and conversation.
In case of inclement weather or if you don’t want to walk, you can still join us at Peaberry’s at 10:15.
On Tuesday, October 14, we will make our annual fall foliage hike to Heublein Tower. We are planning to walk in Reservoir #6 in West Hartford on Tuesday, October 21.
On other weekdays we usually meet at 9 AM to walk along Iron Horse. Lisa is also planning some rambles to a variety of local venues.
We have had a fun group of people and an enjoyable time on each of the rambles. If you haven’t already signed up for our e-mail list or you want more details about any of these upcoming walks, please be sure to contact me.
Hope you can join us on these healthy and fun walks!
Welcome Back to Wine & Women! It’s a great way to get together with old and new friends and enjoy a glass of wine. Monique Aduddell will host the kick-off of our 2008-2009 year. All you need to do is bring a bottle of wine and, if possible, a small appetizer or dessert.
