President’s Corner

Happy fall to all our friends!

We are so glad that if you are new, you have joined us; and if you have been here a while, that you help us to see what Simsbury is all about! We will have had a wonderful fall luncheon by the time you get this and have been able to update the fashion in our closets with Sandra’s help!

We have a new board position and a new person to fill it. The board voted in September to have the child care position expanded into what we called Family Events Coordinator, and that person will seek to plan some family oriented activities during the year. Randi Stamboulis has stepped up into this position and has done Apple Picking in the fall and will be coordinating Breakfast with Santa at Flamig Farm in December. Her e-mail is rlstamboulis@comcast.net if you have an idea for an activity or want to attend. Tickets for the breakfast need to be reserved by November 1st.

Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know you do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone! And if you have not renewed your membership please be in touch with Sherry Hill right away as the annual directory will be out in December.

The Christmas party is approaching and Jane Porterfield & Gerry Pastor has graciously offered to host for one more year! Thank you so much and look for your invitation to come soon.

We are thankful for the wonderful friends and connections we have made through Newcomers and this year as you gather with your family and give thanks for the blessings of this wonderful community!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Wendy Sue Kissa

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

    Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

    Paddle Tennis – Ladies’

Platform Tennis is played outdoors, during the colder months, on raised courts. In snowy conditions, the courts are heated to melt the wintry mix. We play mornings at Simsbury Farms on Mon., from 9:30-11, and on Thurs., from 8-9:30. It’s a great way to socialize with new & old friends, and to stay active through those long winter months. The roster is pretty full, but we are always looking for subs. If you have any questions, or would like to be added to the sub list, please contact Carolyn Brand at 408-1566. Hope to see you on the courts.

    Judy Rabinowitz

    pinochle@simsburynewcomersclub.org

    Pinochle

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

    Potluck Dinner

Many thanks to the hosts and hostesses of another wonderful potluck
dinner. Liz and Skip Kress, Martha and Stu Lott, Mike and Mickey Haag, as well
as Shari and Ed Worth did a marvelous job in making the Indian summer progressive dinner memorable. Heartfelt thanks to those who provided an extra dish when we ran into a few issues. We couldn’t have pulled it off without you.

On November 6th, our hosts will be Patty and Mark Howland. It will be a
Mediterranean theme, with a limit of 38. We will be taking reservations until Friday, October 29th. Please reply promptly as this event sounds as if it’s going to be very popular.

As usual, those who have hosted within the past two years or who offered to host this year will have priority.

Looking forward to seeing you all next month.

    Ginny and Shari
