President’s Corner

Dear Members,

October is here and it’s feeling like fall – the leaves are indeed falling, and at the moment turning beautiful colors, and mostly it is cooling off, although at my house the mosquito population seems to think it is still summer.

Anyway, I am ready for fall and looking forward to our upcoming Potluck Luncheon with a program by Horan’s florists. I know I will see many of you there, and I can’t wait to taste all your yummy recipes!
Please note that we have a brand new group activity called the Cooking Group. Check it out inside the newsletter!

I also want to thank the Walking Group for hosting our first “Gathering”. I hope many of you will be joining us for the next Gathering which is at the Simsbury Public Library on November 14.

Bring friends old or new to visit with us and see what our group is all about.

I hope this newsletter finds you keeping well and warm!

All the best,

Marion

Hospitality

We have a time and place for the 2008 Holiday party, but we need help!

We’re looking for volunteers to assist with setup and cleanup before and after the party, as well as a few miscellaneous (and small) tasks during the event.

If you have any information on who could help (or you’d like to volunteer yourself!) please give me a call!

Activities

This month’s Gathering is hosted by the Daytime Book Club!

You may recall that in place of monthly coffees, SNC will feature an activity each month for current and potential members alike. In November, the Daytime Book Club will serve as host for those who want to see what goes on at book club or what a Newcomer’s activity is like.

Daytime Book Club has reserved a room at the recently renovated Simsbury Public Library for November 14. Not only can you experience the book club but you can check out the library while you are there. For more information, read the “Book Discussion – Days” article, or contact Camilla Thompson @ 658-2038.

Book Discussion – Days

Welcome to Daytime Book Group! We meet either the third or fourth Friday morning of each month and enjoy lively but informal discussion about our book selections. Our meetings last about 1 1/2 hours while a volunteer reviewer provides background information on the author and introduces discussion questions. Rotating hostesses supply coffee, snacks and the venue. Both new and seasoned members are welcome. We look forward to seeing you!    Please R.S.V.P. to Patrice Sala or Camilla Thompson if you have any questions.

Bridge – Couples’

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

cooking@simsburynewcomersclub.org

Cooking Club

There is a new cooking club!

It’s an international idea. The concept: foreign “chefs” offer to give a demonstration or lesson on the traditional cuisine of their home country.

We are not looking for “Naked Chefs”, “Gordon Ramsey”s, or “Rachel Ray”s – but of course, if you are, we won’t hold that against you – just home cooked food, using foreign ingredients, allowing friends to come and open up their palates to a whole new world.

The kitchen needs to be big enough to accommodate at least 5-6 people but there will be a max of about 8-10 – but the final count is decided by the host. The evening’s enjoyment can take place in your own kitchen or, if this is not possible, we will ask for volunteers for a kitchen we can use.

We will have to keep numbers down due to the very nature of these events, so it will be on a “first come, first served” basis. The host will be required to calculate the cost of food and split it between the guests, so that noone will be out-of-pocket. The host will also decide what type of event it will be…breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? it’s your choice!

Our first event is a Thai cook-in on November 13. The demonstrator is a new member, Wanpen Miller, who has her own small Thai food catering business. You must RSVP to be able to attend the event, so contact Karen as soon as possible to reserve your place at the table!

Our first few dry runs featured Thai and Korean cuisine, so come on ladies! Let us share your culture with you! Our attendees so far have been British, Australian, Thai, Korean, Indian, and an American… not only do we share food but we seem to be learning about each others’ cultures and having a great time!

If anyone wants to volunteer either their indigenous cooking, or the use of a kitchen for any future events, or you’d like to reserve a seat for the November meal, please contact Karen.

Paddle Tennis – Couple’s

The Couple’s Paddle Tennis Group plays at Simsbury Farms every Sunday afternoon from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the winter. This is an informal, noncompetitive league combining social activity with good outdoor winter exercise. Each session follows a round-robin format so members experience playing with different partners. We start in November and end in March. Please contact Camilla Thompson if you are interested in participating. See you on the courts!

Pinochle

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Potluck Dinner

October’s Pig Roast was phenomenal due to the hard work and gracious hospitality of Marilyn and Tom Iezzi. We all enjoyed the food and friends and thank them profusely.

Looking forward to November 1st, our hosts will be Carol Henry and Lee Klippel. Since November is the month we select our favorite candidate, our theme will be “Select Your Favorite Recipe” and bring it to potluck.

Our group will be gathering in two different homes in November! We have a limit of 40 and the cut off date for reservations is Friday October 24th. You will be given your food assignment and location on Monday, October 27th via e mail. We are looking forward to enjoying the intimacy of a smaller group.
