Dear Newcomers Members,
Spring has sprung in Simsbury! We are all ready for the Spring Luncheon and Auction this year. We are looking for those of you who are good bakers or who are crafty to make something special, and for those of you who are not to find a donation or purchase an item to donate such as a spa treatment or a fancy cake or a floral arrangement. I can’t wait, and it’s so perfect that it’s just before Mother’s Day.
If you have not gotten you ticket contact Wendy Sue Kissa immediately to come or bring a guest to this wonderful day. If you still want to donate contact Monique Aduddell (look in the Fundraising Section for a message from her!)
Our slate of board members will be elected and installed at the Luncheon, but please don’t hesitate to get involved – we still have a few spots open. Contact Debbie Bernard (658-2515) for more information!
Looking forward to seeing you at upcoming events,
Wendy Sue for Marion
Welcome to Girlfriend’s Corner, where we wish our Newcomer friends happy birthday, and send them get-well wishes as needed. If you think there is a Newcomer who would appreciate a get-well card, new baby, or condolence card, please contact Charlotte Ray by phone or by email.
Happy Birthday Wishes to the following members:
- 5/4 Shelly Cole
- 5/8 Sheila Scott
- 5/22 Pam Callahan
- 5/30 Ann Mungovan
Babysitting is made available for numerous morning events (coffees, sign-ups and special activities, like the Fall Potluck Luncheon) for a small fee of $5.00 (regardless of how many kids you bring), and also for board meetings. If your child has a toy he/she would like to share, feel free to bring it along. Please RSVP to me at least four days prior. Thank you.
It’s time to be thinking of the Backpack Program at Gifts of Love. We haven’t been given a specific family, but will collect items for two children, as we did last year. I will have the suggested school supply lists at the luncheon on May 7th.
Gifts of Love has served 3,142 households in 2008, an increase of 46% from 2007. If you want to help, you may donate directly on their website, www.giftsoflovect.org, or by donating food to the postal food drive on May 9th.
Simsbury Social Services tell me they are in good shape presently, but can always use cash donations for folks who need money for heat or gas, etc.
Making a Donation to the Simsbury Newcomer’s Club Spring Luncheon
Want to make a donation but not sure what to do?
For Non-Baked Goods
- Decide what you would like to donate and make sure you have a description and an estimated value
- Email Monique Aduddell at dennismonique@comcast.net with the above information
- Make plans to deliver your donations before the auction to Monique’s.
For Baked Goods
- Decide what you’d like to bake and email Monique with a description.
- Baked goods can be brought the morning of the luncheon. Make sure that you choose a container or display stand (such as a cardboard circle covered in aluminum foil for a cake) that you do not need or want back.
- Bring copies of your fabulous confection to share with others
Thank you!

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.
Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.
Are you looking for something fun to fill one morning a month? Do you love the thrill of competition? If so, why not sign up to play Bunko. This is an easy dice game you can learn in a few minutes. Join us as a regular or a sub. If you are interested, call Arlene Zappile at 408-9044.
Join your fellow Newcomer members for a cup of coffee and a play date. Come join us Monday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM. Please contact the playgroup coordinator or host if you are interested in joining. Ages birth to 5.

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.
We would like to thank Lowell and Sherry Hill for a fantastic taste of the low country. Thanks again for your gracious southern hospitality.
Potluck is growing in popularity and we usually have enough people on the waiting list to warrant a second house. This will be the case on May 2nd when Don and Vicki Carey are hosting 20 people for a taste of Italy. This is the perfect opportunity for those who have limited space to take their turn using the same theme or another of their choice.
Reservations are being taken now. Hopefully there will be two homes and everyone will be accommodated. As usual, previous and committed future hosts will be given preference. Looking forward to hearing from you.

As spring and nicer weather arrive, I hope that walking in the morning with the Walking Group will become more appealing. We usually walk each weekday morning on the Farmington Valley Greenway trail along Iron Horse Boulevard. We meet in the lower level Park n Ride lot behind and below CVS at 9 AM. You can call me at 651-4611 between 7:45 and 8:30 AM to verify that we are walking that morning. We will plan some rambles in other locations. If you are interested in going on these rambles, be sure that you send me your e-mail address, so that I can send you information about any future rambles. I hope that you can walk with us soon!
Looking for a relaxing evening out? Join us at Charlotte Ray’s home this month for some wine and conversation. Bring a bottle of wine, something to share and prepare to enjoy.
