President’s Corner

Dear Friends,

I am excited to see some signs of Spring (well, OK, no flowers yet, but at least a few sunny, cheerful, very occasionally warmer days starting to appear). They say that the vitamin D from the sun is good for our moods, and I can begin to feel my mood lifting. I hope this finds you all well!

Thanks to the Needlework group for hosting our latest get-together/gathering! The next one will be hosted by Wine & Women, at Debbie Bernard’s house – just getting together for fun and socializing (and of course wine tasting!).

As the weather warms up, consider joining Charlotte and Co. for a walk to soak up that vitamin D!

Very importantly, I am SOOO excited about our upcoming Spring luncheon and auction. It will have a new twist this year and I hope you will join in my enthusiasm. It’s about food, flowers and fun! PLEASE carefully read Monique’s fundraising section and begin to think of what you will donate as well as who you will invite to join you! Non-members are welcome.

Activities groups: if you haven’t already, please plan one of your lovely baskets or donations as a group for us (I am still enjoying books I got from one of the book groups last year!) as they are always much admired and bid upon! I know the needlework group is working its magic once again….

Happy almost Spring and I hope to see you soon!

Marion

Fundraising

This year the theme of our spring luncheon fundraiser is “Take Comfort,” in recognition of the richness that friendships, family, and community bring to our lives.

This year we have decided to give our supportive and wonderful merchants a break and instead we encourage all of you, our wonderful Newcomers, to show off your baking skills and donate a cake, pie, or something sweet – comfort food for others to bid on. Floral arrangements, plants, other home made items and special items that you are comfortable soliciting from merchants are also most welcome.

Please email either Karen Gilston or myself and let us know what you’ll be bringing. We’d also like participating bakers to bring copies of your recipe.

Look for more details on the Newcomers website.

Activities

Featured Activity – Wine & Women

Wine & Women will host our Meet & Greet in February! Each month an SNC activity is featured to encourage current members to try a new activity. Since this takes the place of the former monthly coffees, it gives potential new members an activity to attend while they get information about SNC. For Wine & Women, just bring a bottle of your favorite wine and a little something to share.

Host: Debbie Bernard – 658-2515
Date: Thursday, March 26
Place: 26 Metacom
Time: 7:00

Book Discussion – Days

Welcome to Daytime Book Group! We meet either the third or fourth Friday morning of each month and enjoy lively but informal discussion about our book selections. Our meetings last about 1 1/2 hours while a volunteer reviewer provides background information on the author and introduces discussion questions. Rotating hostesses supply coffee, snacks and the venue. Both new and seasoned members are welcome. We look forward to seeing you! Please R.S.V.P. to Patrice Sala or Camilla Thompson if you have any questions.

  • Friday, March 20 @ 9:30 am – “Bridge of Sighs” by R. Russo
    Location: Patrice Sala’s Home
    Reviewer: Carolyn Brand

Other selections for 2009:

  • Friday, April 24 @ 9:30 am – “Suite Francaise” by Nemirovsky

Bridge – Couples’

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

Paddle Tennis – Couple’s

The Couple’s Paddle Tennis Group plays at Simsbury Farms every Sunday afternoon from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the winter. This is an informal, noncompetitive league combining social activity with good outdoor winter exercise. Each session follows a round-robin format so members experience playing with different partners. We start in November and end in March. Please contact Camilla Thompson if you are interested in participating. See you on the courts!

Pinochle

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Potluck Dinner

Thank you to the Marcums hosting the cooking with love potluck in February. The smaller groups are proving to be very successful. It is enjoyable to get a chance to engage in conversations with the entire group. Thanks again Janet and Jerry.

In March we will again be hosting in 2 different locations. Sue Schwimer and Jean Summers have been kind enough to open their homes to us.
Because of their generosity we are able to accommodate 32. The cut off date for reservations will be March 1st, and as always those who have been involved in hosting will have priority.

Sherry and Lowell Hill are scheduled to be our hosts in April, followed by Vicki and Don Carey in May and we will end the season at the home of Patrice and John Sala.

Some of these hosts have requested a small group so this is an opportunity for you to host a smaller number as well. The theme is the choice of the hosts and will be announced at the time of the invitation.
Looking forward to seeing you.

Walking/Ramble Group

March weather can be pretty unpredictable, but that doesn’t stop the Walking group. We plan to be out walking along the Iron Horse Boulevard walking path every weekday morning if possible. New walkers are always welcome. You can walk with us on any day that is convenient for you. We meet at 9 AM in the lower level Park n Ride lot below CVS. You can call me between 7:45 and 8:30 to verify that I am walking that morning. Hopefully we can start our special rambles again soon. Walking can energize you for the day, and it’s always great that you can have some enjoyable conversation while you are exercising. Come join us!
