The 2009 Simsbury Relay For Life ®, benefiting the American Cancer Society, is an ideal opportunity to participate in a meaningful community event for the whole family!

Held on June 13-14 at Simsbury High School, this overnight fundraiser features moving, inspirational speakers, ceremonies that celebrate survivors and remember loved ones, and many fun activities for families and people of all ages.

Note: Relay For Life is NOT a race- just take your turn walking around the track at your own leisurely pace!

Walk with friends and family members… dance to the music …and if you choose, pitch a tent and stay all night! Whether you’ve been touched by cancer, or are interested in a worthwhile cause you can pursue with friends and loved ones, it’s easy to start your own team. VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO NEEDED AT THE EVENT! Help would be greatly appreciated.

For more information about forming a team, please contact Newcomer Beth Ballentine at 658-0070 or mail4beth@aol.com. Or go to http://www.relayforlife.org/simsburyct

Do you have a daughter/son who would like to baby-sit? Send Patty information of members’ children who are interested to baby-sit. Do you have a service provider you would like to recommend? Patty maintains a “List of Services Recommended by Newcomers”. This is available at the Coffees or can be emailed to members upon request. If you have a recommended service provider, or if you have feedback (good or bad) on anyone on a previous version of this list, please contact Patty Howland.

President’s Corner

Dear Newcomers,

Well, this is my last letter to you as President, so let me say I have really enjoyed this role for the last two years, and am very excited to be handing it to Wendy Sue Kissa who has lots of experience on the board and in various activities.

Next, I would like to thank everyone involved in the successful Spring Luncheon/Auction. We had a wonderful day with perfect weather, delicious food, wonderful auction items and a great crowd. Thank you specifically to Wendy Sue for organizing the Luncheon part and to Monique Aduddell for organizing the Auction, with the help of Karen Gilston. More thanks to all who were ready and willing to lend a hand on the day and to the many of you who made or donated an item!

Remember – some of our activities meet over the summer and some do not. Please read through the articles to check on your favorites, or perhaps some new ones you’d like to try!

We may have another “official” get-together in August – so watch for something from Mariann over the summer for more info. And then of course our Sign-Ups will be in September. I look forward to seeing you there, if not before!

Have a wonderful summer,

Marion

Membership & Directory

Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know they do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone!

Dues are now reduced to $12 (beginning April 1st) for the remainder of the 2008-2009 membership year. Checks should be made payable to “Simsbury Newcomers Club” and sent to Sherry Hill at 12 Olde Orchard Road, West Granby, CT 06090 along with the completed membership form.

Membership entitles you to:

  • A copy of the monthly Newsletter via email or regular mail.
  • One copy of the Directory & periodic updates.
  • Access to the many activity groups, and
  • Childcare for daytime program meetings for a small fee.

Please note that the Directory is for the exclusive use of Club members, cannot be used for solicitation, and will NOT be included on the website.

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

Pinochle

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Potluck

A heartfelt thanks to Don and Vicki Carey for hosting our taste of Italy. We all enjoyed the food, friendship and hospitality.

June’s potluck will be hosted by John and Patrice Sala and the theme will be Caribbean. Patrice has given this event a lot of thought and requests authentic Caribbean Cuisine. She has recommended the West Hartford Library as a source of recipes from this area. Of course you can use your favorite site if you want.

We have a limit of 28 for this event. We expect this one to fill up fast since it is our last one until September. As usual hosts will be given preference.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Ginny and Shari

Walking/Ramble Group

As spring and nicer weather arrive, I hope that walking in the morning with the Walking Group will become more appealing. We usually walk each weekday morning on the Farmington Valley Greenway trail along Iron Horse Boulevard. We meet in the lower level Park n Ride lot behind and below CVS at 9 AM. You can call me at 651-4611 between 7:45 and 8:30 AM to verify that we are walking that morning. We will plan some rambles in other locations. If you are interested in going on these rambles, be sure that you send me your e-mail address, so that I can send you information about any future rambles. I hope that you can walk with us soon!
