President’s Corner

Dear Newcomers,

I wish you all a very happy holiday season. I hope you enjoyed the annual Holiday Party, and many thanks to Jane Porterfield for both organizing and hosting the event! Also to Wendy Sue Kissa for the beautiful invitations and nametags! And to all who helped and who attended and brought delicious food. A great end to the newcomers calendar year.

Looking forward to 2009, I want to get everyone thinking about our Silent Auction EARLY this year. Please put some thought to what you might donate and who you know to ask for a donation, for example, a lawyer who could offer a free consultation, or something like that. Someone with a vacation home who would offer it for a weekend. This type of item will help us raise more money, and let’s work together to see if we can raise more than ever this year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR,
Marion

Nine worthy area organizations have each received $300 and these organizations are:

  • McLean Foundation
  • Simsbury ABC House

Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

Paddle Tennis – Couple’s

The Couple’s Paddle Tennis Group plays at Simsbury Farms every Sunday afternoon from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the winter. This is an informal, noncompetitive league combining social activity with good outdoor winter exercise. Each session follows a round-robin format so members experience playing with different partners. We start in November and end in March. Please contact Camilla Thompson if you are interested in participating. See you on the courts!

Paddle Tennis – Ladies’

Ladies Paddle has begun!! We have a full roster, but can always use subs. Play is on Mon. and Thurs. mornings, on ice-free courts, at Simsbury Farms. Please call or email if interested.

Judy Rabinowitz

pinochle@simsburynewcomersclub.org

Pinochle

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Potluck Dinner

Next month’s potluck will be on January 10, 2009. We will have an international theme (US included.) It will be at the home of Karen & Philip Gilston.

We have a limit of 25, therefore, preference will be given to those who have hosted in the past 24 months or who have committed to hosting this year.

Despite the fact that it is expected that every member must host, no one has offered to do so in February, March and April. Unless some one assumes responsibility this will be our last gathering until May.

Take your turn – don’t let potluck have a three month hiatus! Remember: split groups have been a success and may make your hosting more enjoyable.

Walking/Ramble Group

Winter is a more challenging season for the Walking/Ramble Group. However, we do continue to walk each weekday morning along Iron Horse Boulevard so long as the trail surface is clear and not icy. It really helps to be outside for a while during this time of year. We meet at 9 AM in the lower level Park ‘n Ride lot behind CVS. To verify that we are walking on any morning, you can call Charlotte between 7:45 and 8:30. Join us for good exercise and conversation therapy!
