Dates to Remember
Community Events
Do you have a daughter/son who would like to baby-sit? Send Patty information of members’ children who are interested to baby-sit. Do you have a service provider you would like to recommend? Patty maintains a “List of Services Recommended by Newcomers”. This is available at the Coffees or can be emailed to members upon request. If you have a recommended service provider, or if you have feedback (good or bad) on anyone on a previous version of this list, please contact Patty Howland.
President’s Corner
Dear Newcomer’s Friends,
Happy New Year! The holiday season seemed to fly by this year, and a big thank you to Patty Howland for reorganizing the Christmas Luncheon, it was so good to see friends and the regift exchange was fabulous! Jane Porterfield & Gerry Pastor graciously invited us all back to their home for the Christmas party and since we had to cancel we have come up with a wonderful alternative…..a St. Patrick’s Day party on March 13th! Look for more details to follow in the coming months. If you paid for December and will not be able to attend, we will refund your money, just let Jane know when the next invitation comes out.
There will be a welcome coffee on February 9th at the Library, invite a friend and enjoy fellowship with others new to the area.
We were saddened at the news that one of our longest members, Jackie Citron, passed away. We have made recognition of her life with the American Lung Association on behalf of the club but you are welcome to send cards to Harold during this time of great loss.
The spring luncheon and auction are underway and you will have more details next month. As we come into 2010 let us remember our friends who we have shared memories with in Newcomer’s over the years and reach out to anyone who needs a place to belong here in Simsbury!

Bridge – Couples’
Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.
Bridge – Ladies’
Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.
Bunko
Are you looking for something fun to fill one morning a month? Do you love the thrill of competition? If so, why not sign up to play Bunko. This is an easy dice game you can learn in a few minutes. Join us as a regular or a sub. If you are interested, call Arlene Zappile at 408-9044.
SOMETHING NEW!
If anyone is interested in the evening Bunko group, we are meeting on Wednesday evenings at rotating homes. If you are interested please contact Wendy Sue Kissa or Marion Patterson for more information.

Paddle Tennis – Couple’s
The Couple’s Paddle Tennis Group plays at Simsbury Farms every Sunday afternoon from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the winter. This is an informal, noncompetitive league combining social activity with good outdoor winter exercise. Each session follows a round-robin format so members experience playing with different partners. We start in November and end in March. Please contact Camilla Thompson if you are interested in participating. See you on the courts!
Paddle Tennis – Ladies’
Platform Tennis is played outdoors, during the colder months, on raised courts. In snowy conditions, the courts are heated to melt the wintry mix. We play mornings at Simsbury Farms on Mon., from 9:30-11, and on Thurs., from 8-9:30. It’s a great way to socialize with new & old friends, and to stay active through those long winter months. The roster is pretty full, but we are always looking for subs. If you have any questions, or would like to be added to the sub list, please contact Carolyn Brand at 408-1566. Hope to see you on the courts.
Pinochle
This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.
Potluck Dinner
On February 6th at 7 p.m. we will be gathering at the home of Dick and Vivienne Semler for drinks and appetizers. We will then proceed to Steve and Sheila Scott’s home to enjoy ” Your Sweetie’s Favorite Meal.” Space is limited to 28, so please respond quickly.
We are still waiting for someone to volunteer to host the other half of our group in March.
In addition, while we have thoroughly enjoyed co-chairing Potluck, it’s time to pass the torch. June will be our final event. In order for the group to continue, new co-chairs must take over.
Shari and Ginny
Walking/Ramble Group
Walking for exercise is more challenging during the winter, but we walk as often as possible. The cold temperatures don’t deter us, but we don’t walk if the walking surfaces are slippery. We meet at 9 AM on weekday mornings in the Park and Ride lot in the lower level behind CVS. You are always welcome to join us. You can call or e-mail me to verify that I am walking on a certain day. Where else can you find free exercise and enjoyable conversation?!
Wine & Women
For the January gathering of Wine & Women, Randi Stamboulis will host our group. As always, bring a bottle of wine and perhaps an appetizer or dessert to share.
