Civic Concerns

At this time of year as we gather to celebrate and give thanks, our thoughts turn to those among us whose holiday season will not be nearly as bright. The past year has been a time of unprecedented hardship for many of our fellow citizens. However philanthropy is an integral part of our heritage and many are lending a hand through donations of food, clothing, supplies, and other resources.

Although Thanksgiving is very near, food for holiday meals is not what Simsbury’s Department of Social Services needs at this time. In fact, they won’t run out of canned goods until mid-winter. Rather, they are concerned with the more than 300 households in our community that will struggle to stay warm in their homes this winter. We understand that many of you already support social service agencies which in turn help those in need.

However, if you are looking for another way to help then consider making a financial donation to Simsbury’s Department of Social Services through their social worker’s contingency fund which will allow them to provide immediate help. Checks can be made payable to: Social Workers Contingency Fund, and mailed to Mickey Lecours Beck, Director, Simsbury Department of Social Services, 933 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT, 06070. Please indicate that you are a member of Simsbury Newcomer’s Club.

Membership & Directory

Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know you do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone!

Dues are $24 for the 2009-2010 membership year. Checks should be made payable to “Simsbury Newcomers Club” and sent to Sherry Hill at 12 Olde Orchard Road, West Granby, CT 06090 along with the completed membership form.

  • A copy of the monthly Newsletter via email or regular mail,
  • One copy of the Directory and periodic updates,
  • Access to the many activity groups, and
  • Childcare for AM gatherings & daytime program meetings for a small fee.

Please note that the Directory is for the exclusive use of Club members, cannot be used for solicitation, and will NOT be included on the website. Additional copies of the directory may be purchased while available for $2.00.

Bridge – Couples’

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.

Bridge – Ladies’

Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.

Paddle Tennis – Couple’s

The Couple’s Paddle Tennis Group plays at Simsbury Farms every Sunday afternoon from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the winter. This is an informal, noncompetitive league combining social activity with good outdoor winter exercise. Each session follows a round-robin format so members experience playing with different partners. We start in November and end in March. Please contact Camilla Thompson if you are interested in participating. See you on the courts!

Paddle Tennis – Ladies’

Platform Tennis is played outdoors, during the colder months, on raised courts. In snowy conditions, the courts are heated to melt the wintry mix. We play mornings at Simsbury Farms on Mon., from 9:30-11, and on Thurs., from 8-9:30. It’s a great way to socialize with new & old friends, and to stay active through those long winter months. The roster is pretty full, but we are always looking for subs. If you have any questions, or would like to be added to the sub list, please contact Carolyn Brand at 408-1566. Hope to see you on the courts.

Judy Rabinowitz

Pinochle

This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.

Potluck Dinner

Potluck is off to a wonderful season. Our heartfelt appreciation to Mark and Patty Howland for a “Taste of the Mediterranean” on November 7. The food was outstanding, and the atmosphere delightful! Thanks again, Patty and Mark, for your hospitality and your willingness to host such a large group.

Traditionally we do not have potluck in December because of the Newcomers Holiday party.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone there.

After recalling all the illnesses, conflicts, and snow storms we’ve had to deal with the past three years, we have decided to skip potluck in January. We are looking forward to February with details to follow.

We are presently looking for a second co-host for our March gathering which will be held in two locations with smaller groups.

Looking way ahead to spring… Since the first Saturday in April falls on Easter weekend, we will be moving potluck to the second Saturday…April 10th. Mark your calendars.

As always, we’d love to have you join this lively group for wonderful home-made dishes, friendly conversation, and much laughter. Reservations for each month’s event are taken in order of response with priority given to those who have hosted within the past two years or who have signed up to host. Large homes are not required, nor is the hostess asked to cook anything. If you would like to join us or have any questions, please contact either Ginny or Shari.

Walking/Ramble Group

The Walking Group enjoyed 3 special activities this fall: a hike to Heublein Tower, a walk at Reservoir #6 in West Hartford, and a guided tour through Great Pond State Forest. Even though the weather is now getting colder, we walk each weekday morning along the Greenway trail by Iron Horse Boulevard. You are always welcome to join us at 9 AM. We meet in the Park & Ride lot in the lower level behind CVS. During this busy month this might be a good opportunity for you to take a break for some exercise and friendly conversation. Happy Holidays!
