Dear Newcomers Members,
I am so excited to see Spring! And I’m really getting excited about our Spring Luncheon and Auction this year. I hope you have noticed the different twist (see the Fundraising section!). We are looking for those of you who are good bakers or who are crafty to make something special, and for those of you who are not to find a donation or purchase an item to donate such as a spa treatment or a fancy cake or a floral arrangement. I can’t wait, and it’s so perfect that it’s just before Mother’s Day. Start thinking of who you want to bring as a guest to this wonderful day.
Our slate of board members is nearly complete, but please don’t hesitate to get involved. Contact Debbie Bernard for more information!
The other Spring event I’m particularly excited about is our Coffee morning at the Library on April 28. This is a great opportunity for existing and potential members to get together. I hope you will join us!
Looking forward to seeing you at upcoming events,
Marion

Babysitting is made available for numerous morning events (coffees, sign-ups and special activities, like the Fall Potluck Luncheon) for a small fee of $5.00 (regardless of how many kids you bring), and also for board meetings. If your child has a toy he/she would like to share, feel free to bring it along. Please RSVP to me at least four days prior. Thank you.
What do pilates lessons, a coconut cake and a handmade wreath all have in common? They are a few of the exciting items that will tempt your fancy at our spring luncheon and charity auction scheduled for May 7.
There is still plenty of time to make a donation whether it be an item, a service, or something sweet that shows off your baking skills. If you would like to make a donation please email me and include a complete description. Questions regarding baked goods? I’m happy to answer those as well.
Starting next week you’ll be able to see what is available for auction by visiting the Simsbury Newcomer’s website at simsburynewcomersclub.org
Please invite your friends and neighbors to join the fun and become members of Simsbury Newcomers Club. Encourage them to come to one of our many events as your guest. Do they know they do not have to be new to the area or live in Simsbury to become a member? With more than 20 diverse activity groups there’s something for everyone!
Dues are now reduced to $12 (beginning April 1st) for the remainder of the 2008-2009 membership year. Checks should be made payable to “Simsbury Newcomers Club” and sent to Sherry Hill at 12 Olde Orchard Road, West Granby, CT 06090 along with the completed membership form.
Membership entitles you to:
- A copy of the monthly Newsletter via email or regular mail.
- One copy of the Directory & periodic updates.
- Access to the many activity groups, and
- Childcare for daytime program meetings for a small fee.
Please note that the Directory is for the exclusive use of Club members, cannot be used for solicitation, and will NOT be included on the website.
Membership forms will be available at “gatherings”, general meetings and online @: http://simsburynewcomersclub.org/join-us/membership-form.
Anyone selling, renting or providing a non-club service can advertise in our newsletter. A business card size or ¼ page ad is $15/month. A ½ page ad is $20, a full page ad is $30. Ads will be included based on available space.

Couple’s Bridge meets on the third Saturday of the month. We usually meet in couples’ homes and begin at 7:30 PM. We have a variety of bridge levels, so please don’t be intimidated. Also, a commitment to one month does not commit you for the whole year. We sign up month to month according to our social schedules. I need a call in advance just to be sure we will have even tables.
Ladies’ Bridge meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month between 7:00-7:30 PM at the host house. We are a fun group of 2 or 3 tables of party bridge. Come join us by signing up early. Call Ida after 6 PM or call the hostess to see if there’s a cancellation. Please contact Ida for this month’s schedule.
Are you looking for something fun to fill one morning a month? Do you love the thrill of competition? If so, why not sign up to play Bunko. This is an easy dice game you can learn in a few minutes. Join us as a regular or a sub. If you are interested, call Arlene Zappile at 408-9044.
Tired of the cold? Let the little ones burn some energy while you get your second wind. Join your fellow Newcomer members for a cup of coffee and a play date. Come join us Monday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM. Please contact the playgroup coordinator or host if you are interested in joining. Ages birth to 5.

The Couple’s Paddle Tennis Group plays at Simsbury Farms every Sunday afternoon from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the winter. This is an informal, noncompetitive league combining social activity with good outdoor winter exercise. Each session follows a round-robin format so members experience playing with different partners. We start in November and end in March. Please contact Camilla Thompson if you are interested in participating. See you on the courts!
Ladies Paddle has begun!! We have a full roster, but can always use subs. Play is on Mon. and Thurs. mornings, on ice-free courts, at Simsbury Farms. Please call or email if interested.
This group meets once a month at a different member’s home for an evening of fun and cards. New players are welcome. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you. We generally play on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but call Judy to confirm the location. There is also a Couple’s Pinochle Group outside of Newcomers. Judy can get you connected to this group.
We would like to thank Jean Summers for her generosity in hosting us in March and letting us say “good-bye” to winter with some delicious comfort food. Thanks Jean for all you time and effort.
In April we will leave winter behind and join Sherry and Lowell Hill in exploring the cuisine of Charleston & Savannah. We will enjoy the low country delights of South Carolina.
This will take place on April 4th at 7 P.M. We have a limit of 22 for this event and as is the policy of potluck hosts will be given preference. The cut off date for registering is March 27th.
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
Shari and Ginny
As spring and nicer weather arrive, I hope that walking in the morning with the Walking Group will become more appealing. We usually walk each weekday morning on the Farmington Valley Greenway trail along Iron Horse Boulevard. We meet in the lower level Park n Ride lot behind and below CVS at 9 AM. You can call me at 651-4611 between 7:45 and 8:30 AM to verify that we are walking that morning. We will plan some rambles in other locations. If you are interested in going on these rambles, be sure that you send me your e-mail address, so that I can send you information about any future rambles. I hope that you can walk with us soon!
In April, Katherine Estell will host Wine & Women. So mark your calendars, grab a bottle of wine and a dessert or appetizer and come out for some lively conversation.
